I had such a wonderful time at TomeCon 18 that I wanted to post a little bit about my day to thank all the wonderful students and teachers I met down in Georgia. I had a very full day doing five presentations for both elementary and middle-high school students on setting and world building in fantasy novels. They were great talks, and I found the questions and input from all the students thoughtful and engaging.
In between the book talks, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet some of my fans who read The Silver Gate as a part of the Tome IT list for 2017. It was a thrill for me to meet such enthusiastic readers who were clearly very passionate and excited about all the books they read.
One of my favorite fans I met was this amazing girl who came to TomeCon dressed as Wynn, complete with Mildred. Her costume was fantastic, and I was so happy to meet her. I also had a chance to see some wonderful fan art, including this picture of Elric and Wynn that won a fan art contest! I had a wonderful time. It is one of the best events I have participated in as an author, and I am so grateful to the dedicated team of organizers and volunteers that pulled together to create such a fantastic event for young readers. I hope I can come down to Georgia for another TomeCon in the future.
I’m looking forward to meeting all the students for TomeCon tomorrow. We’ll be talking about Settings in books, and I can’t wait to meet everyone. See you there!

BAILEY, Kristin. Into the Nightfell Wood
Gr 4-6–Only weeks after finding the Silver Gate and becoming the fairy queen’s new princess, Wynn is bored. The fairies keep her safe and sheltered in their kingdom beneath a protective dome of light because of the constant threat of the Grendel, who has stolen the queen’s children before. While Wynn is kept hidden away, Elric, now a prince expected to become a leader to the fairies, is trained for battle, but his true purpose is to draw the Grendel’s attention from his sister. When Wynn is tricked into leaving the protection of the dome and goes into the shadows to save her pet hen Mildred, the queen is devastated, but Elric is determined to find her. Old and new friends alike help the siblings as they search for safety and freedom. Wynn’s ongoing struggle with verbal expression leads others to assume that she is less intelligent or weak, but she proves time and again that her strength is in her hope and perseverance, as well as her devotion to her friends. This sequel to The Silver Gate has some frightening and violent moments, with terrifying creatures that aim to kill. These elements make Wynn and Elric’s bravery all the more impressive and inspirational. VERDICT Readers who enjoy fairy tales with a bit of edge and realistic emotion will appreciate the intensity of Bailey’s story, which deftly portrays the frustrations that children with developmental delays may experience while communicating with others.–Kerry Sutherland, Akron-Summit County Public Library, OH
